Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy which is based on the theory that thoughts, emotions, behaviour and how we feel in our body are all connected and that if we can change one of these then the others will change too.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) aims to help you to develop a better understanding of your problems by helping you to identify thoughts, assumptions, beliefs, and behaviours which cause you to feel sad, angry, depressed, anxious and other negative emotions. It then provides techniques which can help you to scrutinise the distorted thoughts and replace them with more realistic and self-helping alternatives - thus not only helping you to feel better but also feel more able to deal with difficult feelings and/or situations in the future.

CBT has a good evidence base for a wide range of mental and physical health problems in adults, older adults, children and young people, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low self esteem
  • Worry (Generalised Anxiety Disorder)
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Illness anxiety
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Chronic pain
  • Physical symptoms without a medical diagnosis
  • Long Term Conditions
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Anger management
  • Stress management
  • Phobias
  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Shyness
  • Intrusive thoughts

I can help you to notice any patterns in thinking or behaviours which might be keeping problems going and can offer information about different CBT techniques which could help you.

You and I will discuss your specific difficulties and set goals for you to achieve. CBT is not an easy fix – it involves hard work during and between sessions e.g. keeping track of what you are thinking, feeling and doing, or trying out new ways of thinking or behaving.
